Chicken Farm In The Shenandoah Valley

Trip locations: Augusta County , Virginia, Staunton, Churchville, Highland County, Virginia

I had a nice little air b n' b stay at a chicken farm in Augusta County, Virginia.  I stayed in an old spring house cottage. I was going to play First Fridays Staunton, but outdoor weather wasn't great . Instead, I headed to a nearby winery for an open mic. This was a nice retreat for me. The farm was very peaceful and serene .  I had brunch today at nearby Buckhorn Inn, in Churchville, Virginia, before returning home to Richmond. The Buckhorn Inn was on the edge of the George Washington National Forest. I went up a long windy road to check out the old Confederate fort before heading back.  I was right nervous on that road because unlike the major highway , without much more than a soft railing for safety , you ascend to the heavens, without much warning . I didn't want to tumble down the mountain. Either way, it was a nice little weekend trip .

My little cottage was a  spring house right next to the chicken coup . I sang to a passle of chickens there.

I was right next to the main road and in back of the host house, but I felt I had plenty of privacy there.

I entered a windy road west of Staunton and Churchville to see the Confederate works. I was nervous because it felt like I was on a gorge. Going back down the mountain wasn't as bad!

I took a walk through downtown Staunton. I remember it well as my sister graduated from Mary Baldwin College in the 1980s. I was just a little boy then and we attended her graduation there. It was in June, 1984 ,  and plenty hot and humid, even in the valley

I didn't take as many pictures of Staunton this time, because the liberals were in town for some sorta protest. I needed to get out ASAP.

The Buckhorn Inn was the perfect spot to end my valley trip. The edge of the valley here is where you get into the border of Appalachia territory.  The Buckhorn Inn was built in 1811, and Stonewall Jackson slept there. They have great food and live music on the weekends. They were playing Stevie Nicks tunes as I ate, but somehow I was able to keep my appetite.

I really enjoyed my crabmeat eggs benedict. The waitress was a doll, and seemed like a local. Everyone did. It's nice to go to a restaurant and get people who speak English for a change. I hope to return to the area soon.
